A rhyton is a roughly conical container from which fluids were intended to be drunk or to be poured in some ceremony such as libation, or merely at table.
The octopus was a very important symbol to the Minoan culture. It not only represented protection but it also represented wealth and food. The octopus was an expression of the worship of the sea. It was a substance of life related to the movement in decoration. The naturalism of the painting and carving on the pottery depicted life of the octopus. Expression of its eyes, tentacles, seaweed, the way the octopus belonged to the piece. There is also a sense of freedom of expression with the octopus. It dose not care where it goes it is simply free to do what it wants. The octopus is always in control with its body. A sense of smooth movement without the panic.
