Symbol of mystery and the guardian of sacred places. The mythical sphinx had the face of a woman, the body of a lion and the wings of a bird of prey. In Greek mythology, the enigmatic sphinx was associated with Oedipus, to whom she posed her famous riddle. In Egyptian mythology, the sphinx was the guardian of sacred places.
This is a reproduction of an original, currently in the museum at Olympia in the west Peloponnese, dating to the late 6th century BC.
This bronze sphinx is cast for us, in Greece, using the traditional 'lost wax' method. As nothing is mass-produced, there will inevitably be slight variations in patination and colouring. Each piece is, therefore, unique. Also, please allow for variations of a millimetre or two from the specified height.
