The Cycladic civilization of the Aegean sea flourished at about the same time as the early Egyptian and Mesopotamian civilizations (c. 3000-2000 B.C.) and is considered the forerunner of the first truly European civilization.
Aristophanes says his speech explains “the source of our desire to love each other.” He says,
