The Spartan helmet was also developed in the Peloponnese during the Seventh Century BC. These Ancient Greek helmets quickly spread throughout the Mediterranean world during Classical Antiquity and have been excavated in Greece, Italy, Sicily, Sardinia, Spain, Serbia, Bulgaria, the Crimea, and Crete. They were perfectly suited for hoplites fighting in the phalanx formations that characterized warfare in Greece. Spartan helmets were very popular during Classical Antiquity and became closely associated with Greece, Greek culture, and hoplites. As such, the iconic Spartan helmet was often depicted in art. Spartan helmets remained in use for nearly three hundred years, falling out of fashion by the end of the Fifth Century.
Ιn the ancient Greek alphabet the symbol ΑΩ represents the first and the last letter. The beginning and the end. The life that is reborn through its ashes. The circle of life is endless and brings only glory to the one who swears to defend it. His name will remain in the next generations as an example to be imitated.
For the people of Ancient Greece, Meander (or Meandros) was thought to symbolize eternity and the undulating flow of human life through reproduction. The unbroken, interlocking pattern turned it into a symbol of both unity and infinity, whereupon it became one of the most important symbols in Ancient Greece.
